SIP
held a New Year Dinner to celebrate the New Year. Incidentally, it
also coincided with "Ren Ri" ("day for human beings") which is commonly
celebrated as everybody's birthday and yusheng is tossed. According
to tradition, Ren Ri is the seventh day of the first day, on which
if the weather is clear and bright, it is believed that human births
will be prolific during the coming year.
For SIP, it was a day marked with great celebration and respect culminating
in the conferment of an Honorary Fellow on the late Mr Ong Teng Cheong,
one of the pioneer planners in Singapore who was part of the local
team working alongside with the foreign team in drawing up the Urban
Renewal & Development Project, Singapore for the United Nations Development
Programme (Special Fund) in 1971. A total of 70 SIP members and invited
guests attended the Dinner.
The Dinner started at 8pm with SIP President, Mr Tan Shee Tiong, briefly
welcoming and thanking all who attended, followed by a speech by the
invited guest, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister of State for National
Development. Dr Balakrishnan lauded the SIP and SIA for working together
on promoting the need to venture to the 2 fast-emerging economies,
namely China and India as in the joint seminar held on 10 Jan 2003
and he encouraged greater private initiatives of companies desiring
to venture overseas, rather than to have government-led efforts with
private participation.
Mr Tan Shee Tiong then presented the citation on the late Mr Ong Teng
Cheong, highlighting Mr Ong's achievements. On behalf of SIP, Dr Balakrishnan
conferred the Honorary Fellow to Mr Ong Teng Cheong. The award was
received warmly by Mr Ong's two sons, Messrs Ong Tze Guan and Ong
Tze Boon. |
