Joint SIP-SIA Seminar: Breaking in & Doing Well......: Planning & Architectural Services in China & India: A one-day seminar on 10th January 2003 in Singapore
Reported by Shu Charng Yen
The Singapore Institute of Planners (SIP) and the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) jointly organised the above seminar to discuss the potentials and pitfalls of planning and development activities in two very rapidly expanding economies: China and India.

The importance and timeliness of the seminar is underscored by the fact that the Minister for National Development, Mr Mah Bow Tan, graced the occasion and delivered the opening address.

This Seminar came 'hot on the heels' of government efforts to expand services and knowledge based industries both at home and abroad, notably in China and India. Singapore's rootedness in the cultures of China and India stand Singaporean and Singapore based companies in good stead.

There were 2 keynote addresses : the first by Mr Liu Thai Ker, Director, RSP Architects Planners and Engineers, and Mr Goh Sing How, CEO, Jurong Consultants Pte Ltd.

The timely keynote speech by Mr Liu Thai Ker addressed the following:
  • Lessons learnt from the Beijing Olympics Master Plan competition and judging;

  • Positioning Singapore towards the region

  • Protecting and strengthening the Singapore brand name.

Mr Goh, on the other hand, shared his firm's experiences and in China and India, highlighting differences in modus operandi, approval, sources of funding and how Singapore companies can improve their chances of success.

There were a total of 13 speakers in the one-day seminar helf at Sheraton Towers Hotel, Scotts Road. A total of 130 participants attended the seminar. SIP and SIA hopes that the success of the seminar will springboard to greater actual participation of local firms venturing into these two emerging economies.
